Pilates Equipment

Everything you need to know before your first reformer class

What is a Reformer?

The Pilates reformer is a specialised piece of equipment consisting of a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, straps, and a foot bar. Invented by Joseph Pilates, it allows you to perform over 100 exercises that strengthen, lengthen, and tone your entire body using variable resistance.

Unlike mat Pilates, the reformer provides both assistance and resistance, making exercises accessible for beginners while offering a serious challenge to advanced practitioners. The spring-loaded carriage glides smoothly, supporting controlled movements that build deep core strength and improve flexibility.

What to Expect

  1. 1

A warm welcome — your instructor will show you around the reformer and explain the basic mechanics before class begins.

  2. 2

A thorough warm-up focusing on breath, alignment, and activating your deep stabilising muscles.

  3. 3

A series of exercises lying down, sitting, kneeling, and standing on the reformer, progressing from simple to more challenging.

  4. 4

Hands-on corrections from the instructor to ensure safe and effective form throughout the session.

  5. 5

A cool-down with stretches on the reformer, leaving you feeling lengthened and energised.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, fitted workout clothes that allow you to move freely without getting caught in the reformer's springs or straps. Avoid loose shirts and baggy trousers. Grip socks are recommended for hygiene and traction — you can purchase a pair at the studio if you don't have any. Remove jewellery before class to avoid snagging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is reformer Pilates suitable for beginners?+

Absolutely. The adjustable spring resistance makes the reformer ideal for all fitness levels. Your instructor will guide you through each exercise at a pace that suits you.

How is reformer Pilates different from mat Pilates?+

The reformer adds variable spring resistance and a sliding carriage, enabling a wider range of exercises that challenge balance, coordination, and strength in ways that mat work alone cannot.

How often should I attend classes?+

For best results, 2–3 sessions per week is ideal. Even once a week provides noticeable benefits in posture, core strength, and flexibility over time.

Can I do reformer Pilates if I have back pain?+

In many cases, yes. Reformer Pilates is often recommended for back pain because it strengthens the core muscles that support the spine. Always consult your doctor first and let your instructor know about any conditions.

Do I need to bring anything to class?+

Just yourself and grip socks. A small towel and water bottle are handy but not required. All equipment is provided at the studio.
